Buildings of the past and present

Buildings of the past and present

There are still many buildings in Brierley that you can walk past not realising what they were used for.

This is a good example of one. The photo above is the Common Road shop. At the time this photograph was taken,  the shop belonged to Mr and Mrs Hudson. The red in the window reads Brooke Bond Tea and the notice board is advertising cauliflowers for the freezer at 6p each.

Brierley and it’s people in photographs (BAIPIP) present a collection of buildings in the village in our buildings gallery.

Entertainment and Ice-cream

Entertainment and Ice-cream

BY DARREN WOODWARD

My name is Darren Woodward. My Grandparents ran the local corner shop.

They also had the ever famous  ”Danny`s Ices”. The factory is now long gone but the memories are still there. My dad David was the last to make the ice-cream in the factory on church street.

The village had many characters. One I remember was old Horace from down park area who seemed to only say “good for you”. I visit the village still and I have so many happy memories of Brierley, were everyone knew everyone and everyone helped each other too.

I now live in Stairfoot with my family. I also remember been a kid in Brierley club with my mam and dad and I would entertain them by singing songs by Al Jolson. I still entertain now. My wife and I are full-time children’s entertainers and Magician`s.

I have many more memories. How about you? Let us know yours here!

Brierley lad Wayne Sheard has earned his cabin crew wings with British Airways this week.

The presentation took place at the Waterside building in Harmondsworth, London which is the international head office of British Airways.

Brierley Village asked Wayne how it feels working for a big company who is at the hub of 21st century travel?  ”it’s very rewarding and exciting “, Wayne said.

We wish him all the best in his new career.

The Spaxmans

The Spaxmans

BY ANDREW SPAXMAN

Andrew James Spaxman - Born Sept 1972

I was born in September 1972 and lived the first 21 years of my life in village of Brierley.

I first lived at 1 Ashleigh and then at 2 Grange Close. I now live in Gawber which is not too far away in Barnsley with my lovely wife and child.

It would take an entire website to write the memories of Brierley and the people I encountered in this small village. Each one of them had their own unique character and I will dearly cherish that forever.
